Halloween 2013
Halloween evening started out by meeting Daddy at Grandma's so she could see the costumes before we got to trick or treating.
The Boys
First stop was Dennis and Janice's house in Daddy's neighborhood.
This was Alex's first actual trick or treating and he had no clue what was going on. We would take him up to the doorstep, set him down then back away. He would turn with a look on his face that said "why the heck are you leaving me on this strange doorstep in the dark by myself???" while Matthew rang the bell and yelled "Trick or Treat!!!". Then when the door was answered he would turn around and stare open mouthed at the strangers. He was interested in the candy part but if anyone tried to put it in his pumpkin pail, he would get really mad, pull it out and chuck it on the ground.
Needless to say, he didn't do many houses.
Between houses.
After a few houses in Daddy's neighborhood, the boys and I headed up the hill to do some more trick or treating closer to home.
Matthew was great. At every house he would pause at the end of the driveway, I would say "Do you want me to come with you?" and his reply for all but the house above (which was VERY well decorated) was "Its ok, I can handle this" and off he'd go. Alex rode along in the stroller snacking on toast bits.
All through the trick or treating Matthew kept telling me he was excited to go home so we could trade candy. Even though he was the only with candy when we got home, he dumped it all on the floor, instructed us to sit in a circle around it and he started to trade.
and Alex discovered lolly pops.
This one he took to the tub as it was getting out of hand very quickly.
Both were in bed by 9!!
Dress Rehearsal
This years Halloween costume required much more prep time than a trip to the costume megastore so it wasn't until a couple days before the big event that I was able to do a dress rehearsal.
Alex wore the green dino/dragon costume.
He was thrilled with it when I put him up on the counter in the bathroom where he could see himself from head to toe.
Matthew requested a Tarantula costume. Since they don't make ready made tarantulas, I volunteered to make it. We searched google for images of tarantula costumes and found one that looked do-able. Why does it always look so much easier in a the picture? After many more hours than expected and several trips to Joann fabrics and the dollar store, we had a tarantula costume.
This is just the pants and the gloves but already he is feeling very tough.
Alex loved his costume so much he just wanted to walk around the house again and again. Which turned into a game of chase.
This is Matthew's costume (minus the black socks) in its "on all eight" presentation (with the menacing face).
It took a lot of hours but in the end turned out great and held together right to the very end (thank goodness for hot glue) and best of all he LOVED it!!
Hangin' With Moley
Moley has learned that Alex is very gentle and fairly quiet and won't chase him around while squealing (ahem) so he is tends to stay put when Alex wants to snuggle.
An Afternoon
On one of the last sunny days of October, Auntie Kathy came over after work to hang out.
Matthew found a really big rolly polly bug in the backyard and made a new ring for Auntie.
Alex was enjoying having his picture taken.
Pumpkin Carving
Now comes the fun part. Carving the pumpkins.
Matthew started out as our primary remover of innards.
What's in there anyway?
Alex was very interested in taste testing the innards.
apparently they don't taste as good as they look.
So he settled on stirring the bowl of seeds
Matthew handed over the dirty work to me and took over as chief photographer.
